The role of the Nervous System in Depression, Restoration Chiropractic, Columbia, MO

October 15, 2019

Not all disorders or illnesses can be seen with the human eye. Sometimes, we face health problems that are "invisible," but that doesn’t make them any less real.

Depression can impact our mental health and decrease our overall quality of life. It can leave us feeling isolated, helpless, immense emotional pain, etc.

Mood disorders are also linked to an increased risk of
cardiovascular disease (CVD).

When it comes to understanding and taking care of our health, mental
health is just as important as physical health!

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) does a lot for our body – it helps keep our organs and glands functioning properly!

So, what can it do for our mental health? Studies show that depression has been linked to increased inflammatory markers and autonomic dysregulation. Autonomic activity can be measured through heart rate variability. Depression has been linked to decreased HRV and activity of the Vagus nerve!

What this means is that a healthy, fully functioning ANS (Autonomic Nervous System) can keep our HRV and cardiac vagal activity where they need to be and help keep depression at bay by providing the body with the best functioning possible.

Because research shows that neurologically-based chiropractic care improves both heart rate variability and Vagus nerve activity, it can play an essential role in improving the quality of life in individuals suffering from depression.

Neurologically-based chiropractic care works to help the nervous system by keeping it fully functioning without any interference (subluxation). Removing subluxation through gentle, specific adjustments offers the nervous system the best chance for effective functioning, and therefore allows other aspects of our health related to the nervous system to thrive. Depression can hold someone back and generate feelings of helplessness, but it doesn’t have to be that way!

Mental health is important and looking at the physical aspect of mental health sparks an opportunity for gaining a more in-depth understanding of how to manage it!
